Nerves

I don't know if anyone else is watching the countdown on the right side of our blog, but if not, I'll draw your attention to it.

YIKES! I'm running a half marathon in less than 48 hours!!

It's strange. I didn't think I'd be nervous. Although the typical training schedule for a half marathon only requires running 10 miles prior to the race (which is 13.1 miles long), Chelise and I decided, for various reasons, to try to run the full distance prior to race day. Last Tuesday we did it (or at least got really close). So I shouldn't be nervous. I know I can do it. But...

Some people have told me that running a race is easier than training for it because of the adrenalin boost on race day. My experience has been the opposite. My nerves, along with the unfamiliar course, have always made a race harder for me. I'm guessing this race will be no different. So here I sit having last minute panic episodes. Do I carbo-load? Do I not carbo-load? What do I eat the night before? What do I eat the morning of? Should I just do what I've been doing, or should I try to do something to really improve my performance? Unfortunately, online searches just provide conflicting information, so I've come to the conclusion that I need to pretend that Saturday morning will just be another ordinary run, and eat/sleep/behave accordingly.

Really, my aspirations are not that high. I don't have any intention of competing, I have no goals for how fast I want to complete the race. I just want to run the whole thing...

Maybe I should at least set a goal that I won't fall on my face. :)

What do you use for your training schedule. Is there a website?

There are a lot of training programs out there, but I haven't used one myself...I just kind of made up my own based on what I'd seen out there as well as my goal of running the full 13 miles before race day.

Oh my goodness, you won't fall on your face. You'll do great! I'm so excited for you! When I first read it, I thought you said, "I don't have any intention of completing..." I added an "L" :) I know you will compete well and complete the race. Go Karene! You're an inspiration to us all!

It has been my experience that if I'm nervous about something way in advance of when it happens, when the time comes for the actual event, I'm fairly calm and nervous-ed out. But if I'm calm the days preceding the event, I'm super crazy nervous the day of. So maybe this is a good thing. Get it out of your system now (literally, if being nervous affects your intestines as it does mine) so that Saturday you'll be pumped and ready to go. I'm excited for you! GO KARENE!

Karene, if you fall on your face, I'll be there to brace your fall! Here's a phrase that a 4 year-old told me when I was babysitting her several years ago after I asked her if her Mom would let her do something questionable; She said: "You worry too much." I have been trying to live by her statement since.

Actually, I am nervous too! Or maybe we are just ANXIOUS! It will be fun! Let's just finish!

Not to make you any more anxious/nervous but it looks like only 12 hours till race time now! I can't believe you guys are running this without me, wish I could be there. I know you are going to do so great. Make sure you both finish in time to get a popsicle:) and I can't wait to see your sweaty pictures.
