Okay, so don't say I didn't warn you. But I have to share what I just overheard for those of you who will enjoy it. I was putting away food in the kitchen when I heard Cole in the living room:
"Come out! Come out!" *grunt* "Come out!" *grunt*
Silence, then...
"Thank you, Poopy, thank you!"
I think he's ready to be potty trained.

How original are our kids' names?
Cole:
Weston:
I guess that doesn't tell you how many other kids with their first name they'll run into in their lives, but since Hansen isn't THAT uncommon, we didn't do too badly! I've always wanted to give my kids names that weren't totally unheard of, but not too common. It'll be interesting to see how many kids with their names they run into as they get older. Speaking of which, my brother Devin found a girl on Facebook named Karene. Now that doesn't happen every day.

In the spirit of Valentine's Day, a little late
I've been tagged for this little bit of lovers' info, so here goes!
What is your hubby's name? Brian Whitelaw Hansen
How long have you been together? How long did you date? We've been married since August 2003 (we'll celebrate our 5 year anniversary this year!). We met in January 2003, went on our first date at the end of March, got engaged at the end of May, and were married at the beginning of August. Yes, all of this after both of us swore (prior to meeting each other) that it was silly to move quickly and that you had to know someone at least a year before you could even consider marrying them! Thankfully, we're still going strong 5 years later and are setting our sights on eternity (go ahead, big ahhhh from the crowd...)
Who said I love you first? Brian did. I never would have had the nerve.
Who is smarter? Brian, hands down. I can't even have an intelligent conversation about the things he does at work. I think I'm a bright enough person, but Brian's downright brilliant.
Who does the laundry? Who does the dishes? I do most of the laundry, but Brian helps a lot with the dishes. We've both been a lot happier since we got a dishwasher, though.
Who sleeps on the right? Right now, it alternates every night. Whoever's turn it is to get up in the night with Weston sleeps on the right (closest to the door). Now would be a good time for everyone to be duly impressed that Brian has stepped up to help me with the night feedings, since it seems they're not going to be over anytime in the near future...thanks, honey!
Who pays the bills? I do.
Who cooks dinner? I do most of the time, but Brian is actually a pretty good cook. When I need help, he can fill in and cook a nice meal, as long as he's got the recipe and ingredients in front of him.
Who drives when you are together? Brian, unless he begs me to on a long drive. I really hate driving.
Who is more stubborn? Me. Definitely. Poor Brian. :)
Who kissed who first? Brian...again, I was definitely not one to put the moves on during the dating phase...
Who asked who out first? You guessed it! Brian.
Who proposed? Again, that would be...Brian.
Who has more siblings? I do, but only by one. I have five siblings, and Brian has four.
Who wears the pants? I should probably say I do...Brian's sister is fond of telling me that I'm good at making Brian believe he's making decisions with me, but it's really all me. I'd like to think that it's more equal though. Maybe I should have Brian weigh in here. :)
I tag anyone who wants to share!

Memorable Moments
Cole has a fascination for flowers. Last year about this time we planted rose bushes in front of our house. Cole loves to smell the roses, and consequently he's become well-acquainted with thorns. On Monday when we were in St. George we drove past a church building, Cole pointed at the steeple and said, "LOOK, Momma! That church has a THORN!" I love those little insights into the way their minds work. Another flower-related experience...a few days ago we had some friends over for dinner and they brought us potted tulips. Yesterday Cole and I were examining the tulips and Cole kept saying what sounded to me like, "This is called a floor-whip." Finally I figured out that he was saying, "This is called a four-lip." Two-lip, four-lip, hey, whatever works!
Awhile ago my sister Tamarie made a post on her blog about the things babies do that you forget about after they get older. (One of my favorite posts of hers, by the way!) That made me want to write about one of my favorite things Weston does right now. He still likes to be swaddled when he sleeps, but he's getting so big that the swaddling blanket can't go around his feet anymore, so basically his arms are just wrapped to his sides. Anyway, whenever he wakes up from a nap or first thing in the morning, my favorite moment is when I walk into the room and he catches sight of me. Since he can only move his legs, they just start thumping madly on his mattress and he gives me a big, gummy baby grin. I love it!
Speaking of Weston, he just had a milestone moment while I was typing--his first independent roll from his back to his tummy! Way to go, kiddo!

How many of us?
I saw this on my friend Kelli's blog and thought I'd try it for our family.
Lots of Brian Hansens....
Not so many Karene Hansens. What a shocker! Actually it said that my first name isn't even in their database. Way to go Mom and Dad! They found a nice unique name...

Sad time
It's been a hectic week. Brian's sister gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, two weeks ago. About a week ago we received a call from Brian's mom saying that the little girl, who had seemed to be doing well, was having trouble and was being life-flighted to Primary Children's hospital in Salt Lake City (they were in St. George). The next morning we received word that she didn't make it. It was a very difficult time for them and for the whole family. We flew to St. George on Saturday evening so we could be there for the memorial service which was held on Monday, and then we returned on Tuesday evening. Thankfully their little boy is doing well and was just released to go home with his parents on Monday evening, so we were able to see him before we left. Anyway, it's at times like these you step back, gain a lot of perspective, and stop to thank God for the blessing of two healthy children (even when they redecorate with nail polish!).

Home Decorating
We do look forward to the time when we can own a home and decorate it just the way we want to. However, today sealed the deal...Cole will not be a consultant OR do any of the labor when that time comes. Why? Well, not just because he's 2 years old (and thus inexperienced). He showed me a sample of his work today and I'm just not very impressed. Imagine my horror when I walked into the bathroom and saw this...

I have to say I'm just proud of myself for not losing my temper, and for having the presence of mind to take a few pictures. I was on the phone with Tamarie at the time so maybe that helped (it's harder to scream at your kids when someone's listening). In any case, it's NOT FUN trying to scrape red fingernail polish off every surface in your bathroom! I did put him to work to clean it up...
Check out the body paint! He didn't really enjoy the process of scrubbing it off his skin, so maybe that will deter him in the future.

Nice work, Cole. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH. And in case you're wondering--no, it's not coming off very well. I guess we can be thankful we don't own this house.

And...we're back!
Well, take a deep breath and get ready for a fun ride! We're back, finally, and we're posting a ton of pictures and commentary to update you all on our lives during the last few months. Hopefully we can blog a little more regularly from now on, but here goes!
I love this picture of Cole because he figured out the trick of putting the olives on his fingers without any parental instruction. Is there any kid in the world who hasn't discovered the joy of putting olives on their fingers! It's a sad day when your fingers get too big and the olives don't fit anymore...
Weston tried his first taste of rice cereal a few days ago. He tolerated it, but wasn't a big fan. This was in direct contrast to Cole, who downed it the first time he tried it. The side of the rice cereal box tells you that if it's their first time, to mix 1 tablespoon rice cereal with 4 tablespoons of water. When I did that with Cole, he devoured that and I had to make several more servings that size before he was satisfied. Weston, on the other hand, ate about half of his first serving. I gave him more tonight though and he liked it a little better. People say it's a myth that giving your child solid food before bed helps them sleep longer at night, but we're still hoping...Weston STILL thinks he needs to wake up between 12 and 2 a.m. for a feeding every night, and I'm really ready to have my nights back.
I love his face in this shot!
Baby smiles are the best things on earth!
Dad and his cute boys in their Sunday attire...looking pretty sharp, huh?
Weston has developed this strange method of sucking on his pacifier. He seems to like it this way, but it drives me crazy when he does it. Funny, though.
Cole has really surprised and impressed us with the degree of his affection for his baby brother. He likes to get with him under his arch and put a blanket over both of them. Weston seems to like it as well, as long as Cole is careful and doesn't knock him in the head while he's getting situated.
This is our first time experiencing the baby bald spot. Cole had so much hair that his just got all matted instead of rubbing off. This thing just cracks us up! I hear it goes away once they learn to sit.
Maybe a little time spent in the Exersaucer will help improve the bald spot situation as well.
Just a couple crazy pictures of the adults in the family...Brian wanted to include this one of me so I got back at him by putting the next one in. :)
This post is mostly a photo journal...maybe we'll start contemplating the mysteries of the universe and comment on our conclusions in our next post. :)
